RECOGNIZING THE GOODNESS OF GOD
“O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.”
— Psalm 34:8 (KJV)
Understanding the Nature of God’s Goodness
Before we can respond to God's goodness, we must first recognize it. God's goodness is not merely something He does—it is who He is. Goodness is part of His eternal nature. From Genesis to Revelation, God reveals Himself as gracious, kind, compassionate, and faithful.
When Moses asked to see God's glory, God responded not with a display of power or miracles, but by proclaiming His name and His character:
“The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth” (Exodus 34:6).
This declaration underscores an important truth: Goodness is not just an attribute of God—it is the atmosphere of His presence.
The Subtlety of God’s Daily Goodness
Many believers expect God’s goodness to always manifest in dramatic ways—supernatural breakthroughs, miraculous healings, financial turnarounds. While those are indeed expressions of His goodness, they are not the only ones.
God’s goodness is also in:
• The breath you just took.
• The sound of your heartbeat.
• The peace in your home.
• The meal on your table.
• The people who care for you.
• The forgiveness you didn’t deserve.
We often fail to appreciate these because we’ve become accustomed to them. But to reciprocate God’s goodness, we must first slow down and see what we’ve been ignoring.
Biblical Examples of Recognizing God’s Goodness
• David, a man after God’s heart, often paused to declare God’s goodness. In Psalm 103:2, he says, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.”
He understood the danger of forgetfulness and the power of remembrance.
• The ten lepers in Luke 17 were all healed by Jesus, but only one returned to give thanks. He recognized what had been done for him and turned back to honor the Source.
• Joseph in Egypt never lost sight of God’s hand in his journey, even when his brothers betrayed him. He testified, “God meant it unto good…” (Genesis 50:20).
In all these examples, recognition preceded reciprocation.
Why Recognition Is Foundational
When we recognize the goodness of God:
1. We develop a heart of gratitude – Thanksgiving becomes natural.
2. We cultivate humility – We realize we are not self-made.
3. We are moved to action – Acknowledging God compels us to live for Him.
4. We combat the spirit of entitlement – We stop comparing and start praising.
Ungratefulness often stems from blindness. When you stop seeing what God has done, you stop saying what He deserves to hear.
Reflection
Have you become so familiar with God's blessings that you no longer marvel at them? Have you been waiting for a big miracle to thank God, while ignoring the daily ones?
Today, open your eyes again. Look around. Look within. Recognize His goodness in every detail of your life. You’ll soon find that you have more reasons to praise than to complain.
Prayer Points
1. Father, open my eyes to see the daily expressions of Your goodness in my life.
2. Lord, forgive me for any way I have taken Your blessings for granted.
3. Holy Spirit, teach me to live with a heart that constantly acknowledges God's goodness.
4. I cancel every spirit of ingratitude, entitlement, and spiritual blindness in my life.
5. Lord, let my recognition of Your goodness translate into consistent praise and service.
