Still Blaspheming.
As the fifth plague continues to be poured out, we see, yet again, the character of those who have chosen to reject God. Just as with the fourth plague, these people blaspheme God and don’t repent. We are given further proof, further emphasis, that those with the mark of the beast have willfully and knowingly chosen the devil’s side in the great controversy.
Notice also that “their sores” are mentioned in today’s verse. We’ve seen that they received this “foul and loathsome sore” (Revelation 16:2) under the first plague. From this, we can determine that these judgments are somewhat cumulative, building one atop another.
Particularly between the two extremes of the back-to-back plagues, the intense heat of the sun in the fourth and the pitch darkness in the fifth, these individuals have had ample opportunity in life to realize the errors of their ways, to turn back, to plead forgiveness. Yet even still, they do not. Instead of accepting the consequences of their actions, they instead project all the blame onto God.
God, meanwhile, is showing, especially in these two plagues, His creative power. God truly is the One who “made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host”; and that means He “alone [is] the LORD” (Nehemiah 9:6). He can give the sun, and He can take it away. He is the one and only Creator. This fact will be made obvious to everyone through the fourth and fifth plagues. “Those who dwell on the earth” (Revelation 13:14) will know full well the Executor of these judgments. And even after they have received undeniable proof of who God is, they still choose to blaspheme Him.
Don’t miss this: Scripture tells us that this will occur, for one, in Vatican City itself. Undoubtedly, there will be clergy among those blaspheming their Maker. It will be revealed that some so-called believers will have been worshiping a different god. Working for a church, wearing priestly garb, even knowing its doctrines backward and forward doesn’t automatically mean you’ll be saved. The book of Revelation has repeatedly been telling us: It’s who you are worshiping that matters.
Creator God, keep me from merely putting on a form of godliness; help me instead to learn and love Your ways.
