LIVING IN OBEDIENCE
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
— John 14:15 (KJV)
Obedience: The Evidence of Love
In the kingdom of God, obedience is not legalism—it is love in action. Many say they love God, but love is proven by obedience. Jesus did not say, “If you love Me, sing to Me” or “If you love Me, cry in worship.” He said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
Obedience is the truest proof that we have recognized God's goodness and are living in response to it.
Obedience Is Better Than Sacrifice
In 1 Samuel 15:22, the prophet Samuel rebuked Saul saying,
“Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.”
Saul offered sacrifices, but disobeyed God’s instructions. His actions were religious, but not righteous.
True obedience:
• Prioritizes God's voice over personal desire
• Seeks to please God, not people
• Reflects alignment, not just activity
• Honors God above all else
God does not delight in offerings without obedience.
Why Obedience Is a Reciprocation of Goodness
When we obey:
1. We show that we trust God's wisdom
2. We walk in alignment with His plan for our lives
3. We prove that we value our relationship with Him
4. We demonstrate gratitude for all He has done
The more we understand God's heart, the easier it becomes to obey Him—even when it’s not convenient. Obedience is the fruit of intimacy.
Biblical Examples of Obedience
• Abraham obeyed when called to sacrifice Isaac (Genesis 22). His obedience unlocked a generational blessing.
• Noah obeyed God and built the ark, even when there was no sign of rain. His obedience preserved humanity.
• Jesus, the ultimate example, obeyed the Father unto death (Philippians 2:8). His obedience secured our salvation.
Every act of obedience is a seed that yields divine results.
Delayed Obedience Is Still Disobedience
Sometimes, believers negotiate with God. We delay obeying until it's convenient or until we "feel ready." But obedience must be immediate, complete, and joyful.
Partial obedience is disobedience. Delayed obedience dishonors God's timing.
Ask Jonah—his delay nearly cost him his life and the lives of others on board the ship. But when he obeyed, an entire city was spared.
Walking in Obedience Today
To walk in obedience:
• Spend time in God’s Word to know His commands
• Cultivate sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s leading
• Seek accountability from spiritual mentors
• Pray for grace to follow through, not just to agree in theory
• Practice obedience in the small things; it prepares you for the big
Reflection
Obedience is not always easy, but it is always right. What is God asking you to do that you’ve been postponing? What instruction have you rationalized or ignored? God doesn’t expect perfection—He desires submission.
Today, choose to live in obedience as your response to His goodness.
Prayer Points
1. Father, give me a heart that delights in obeying You completely.
2. Lord, forgive me for every act of delayed or partial obedience.
3. Holy Spirit, empower me to follow God’s will, even when it’s uncomfortable.
4. I declare that my life will be marked by joyful submission to God’s commands.
5. Lord, help me to love You not just in words, but in obedience.
