THE DEADLY SIN OF GLUTTONY

Food sustains the body, giving it what it needs to function properly, and if prepared correctly can be a delightful experience. However, it can become such a big part of a person's life that it controls their life, and eating becomes a top priority. When food becomes so important it is called "gluttony" or "habitual greed," or "excess in eating," In the Bible, gluttony is condemned as a sin which consumes the body and the soul.

Gluttony is "an inordinate desire" for food and drink that goes beyond reasonableness and therefore departs from goodness. In Scripture, excessive eating is shown in conjunction with wicked behavior and men living in sin.
As with all things of earth, food can become an idol and an idol and a hindrance to the believer, or a blindfold to someone who does not know Jesus, preventing that person from getting to know the LORD.

Gluttony is a sin because it gives too high a priority to physical desires.
The path of those who indulge in too much wine and too much food is a ruinous one. Moderation in all things is much preferred over gluttony.

Gluttony is a sin because the Bible promotes self-control as one of the characteristics of the Spirit-led life. We are to curb physical appetites and not let them control us. It stands to reason that we must also control our stomachs. The ability to say "no" to anything in excess is a godly skill.
