In the amazing story of Naaman (2 Kings 5), a mighty general with leprosy, the instruction was clear: to immerse himself "seven times" in the Jordan River. And in doing so, his skin was restored "like the flesh of a child." A true miracle!
2 Kings 5:14 (NIV): "So Naaman went down into the Jordan and dipped himself seven times, according to the word of the man of God; and his flesh became like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean."
Why "seven times" and what does this mean for us today?
It was not magic in the number, but a call to something much deeper:
Complete Obedience:
The number seven in the Bible often symbolizes perfection or completeness. Once or twice was not enough; Naaman had to complete the cycle.
For us, it means total and unreserved obedience to God's will, even when we don't understand it or it seems illogical to us. It is doing everything God asks of us.
Perseverance in Faith:
Sometimes, we expect an instant miracle. Naaman had to dive in again and again.
It means not giving up after the first attempt, the second disappointment or the third challenge. It is standing firm in faith, believing that God's promise will be fulfilled if we persevere.
Total confidence in God's methods:
Naaman's pride was his greatest obstacle. Every immersion was an act of humiliation and surrender.
For us, it means letting go of our self-sufficiency, our control and our own "solutions" (our "Damascus rivers"). It is to trust fully in God's method, no matter how "simple" or "despicable" it may seem in our eyes.
Naaman's transformation from "leprosy" to "the flesh of a child" was not just physical; it was a change of heart that led him to recognize the true God. When we submit "the seven times"-that is, to complete obedience, perseverance and total surrender to God-He also transforms us from our "leprosy" (sin, sickness, wounds, pride) to a new and pure life.
