MIRACLE (45) By B.B.John
On the Sabbath day, Jesus went for a dinner in the house of a leader of the Pharisees and there He saw a man with dropsy - severe swollen possibly caused by kidney or heart disease. The fact that the pharisees were closely watching Jesus, hoping to catch Him breaking tradition, suggested that the man might have been deliberately brought there. Nevertheless, Jesus took a bold stance and asked them a question:
"Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?" (Luke 14: 3)
But they were all silent and won't answer Him. So, the Great Physician took the man, healed him, and asked him to go home.
He then turned to the Pharisees and rebuked them for their hypocrisy and inconsistency; they would deliver their animals on the Sabbath but not the suffering people.
"... Which of you, having a donkey or an ox fallen into a pit, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?" (vs. 5)
Again, they couldn't answer His question. It was a calculated silence. They can't deny the truth without nailing themselves, but their hardened hearts won't let them admit it.
THREE LESSONS
Here are the lessons for us to learn:
1. By asking them "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath" Jesus had shifted our focus from legalism to mercy; from keeping rules to showing kindness to the afflicted.
2. By healing on the Sabbath, Jesus declared the arrival of the messianic age; an age of restoration, liberation, healing and God's perfect rest (spiritual Sabbath). (Mark 2: 27)
3. Let's do away with theological pretences and religious practices that hinder us from showing mercy and compassion. Let's deliver ourselves from bloated self-righteous spirit and put compassion over strict tradition
Main Texts
Luke 14: 1 - 6
Memory Verse
Luke 14: 3
Remain blessed for reading. Happy Midweek! Trust you have a blessed day. Be great in Jesus Name.
