1 Thessalonians 5:16-22 Exploring GNB

1 Thessalonians 5:16-22 Be joyful always,

pray at all times,

be thankful in all circumstances. This is what God wants from you in your life in union with Christ Jesus.

Do not restrain the Holy Spirit;

do not despise inspired messages.

Put all things to the test: keep what is good

and avoid every kind of evil.

2 Corinthians 6:4-10 Instead, in everything we do we show that we are God's servants by patiently enduring troubles, hardships, and difficulties.

We have been beaten, imprisoned, and mobbed; we have been overworked and have gone without sleep or food.

By our purity, knowledge, patience, and kindness we have shown ourselves to be God's servants — by the Holy Spirit, by our true love,

by our message of truth, and by the power of God. We have righteousness as our weapon, both to attack and to defend ourselves.

We are honoured and disgraced; we are insulted and praised. We are treated as liars, yet we speak the truth;

as unknown, yet we are known by all; as though we were dead, but, as you see, we live on. Although punished, we are not killed;

although saddened, we are always glad; we seem poor, but we make many people rich; we seem to have nothing, yet we really possess everything.

Ephesians 6:17-18 And accept salvation as a helmet, and the word of God as the sword which the Spirit gives you.

Do all this in prayer, asking for God's help. Pray on every occasion, as the Spirit leads. For this reason keep alert and never give up; pray always for all God's people.

A Life that Pleases God

1 Thessalonians 4:1-5 Finally, our brothers and sisters, you learnt from us how you should live in order to please God. This is, of course, how you have been living. And now we beg and urge you in the name of the Lord Jesus to do even more.

For you know the instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.

God wants you to be holy and completely free from sexual immorality.

Each of you men should know how to live with his wife in a holy and honourable way,

not with a lustful desire, like the heathen who do not know God.

1 Peter 2:15-17 For God wants you to silence the ignorant talk of foolish people by the good things you do.

Live as free people; do not, however, use your freedom to cover up any evil, but live as God's slaves.

Respect everyone, love your fellow-believers, honour God, and respect the Emperor.

The True Spirit and the False

1 John 4:1-3 My dear friends, do not believe all who claim to have the Spirit, but test them to find out if the spirit they have comes from God. For many false prophets have gone out everywhere.

This is how you will be able to know whether it is God's Spirit: anyone who acknowledges that Jesus Christ came as a human being has the Spirit who comes from God.

But anyone who denies this about Jesus does not have the Spirit from God. The spirit that he has is from the Enemy of Christ; you heard that it would come, and now it is here in the world already.

Philippians 4:8-9 In conclusion, my brothers and sisters, fill your minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honourable.

Put into practice what you learnt and received from me, both from my words and from my actions. And the God who gives us peace will be with you.
