1 Thessalonians 5:16-22 Exploring ESV

1 Thessalonians 5:16-22 Rejoice always,

pray without ceasing,

give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you,

Do not quench the Spirit,

Do not despise prophecies,

but test everything; hold fast what is good.

Abstain from every form of evil.

2 Corinthians 6:4-10but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way; by great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities.

beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger;

by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love;

by truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left;

through honor and dishonor, through slander and praise. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true;

as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold, we live; as punished, and yet not killed,

as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything.

Ephesians 6:17-18 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,

praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,

Life Pleasing to God

1 Thessalonians 4:1-5Finally, then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more.

For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus.

For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that you abstain from sexual immorality,

that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor,

not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God;

1 Peter 2:15-17For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.

Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.

Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.

Test the Spirits

1 John 4:1-3 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the
spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.

By this you know the Spirit of God; every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,

and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.

Philippians 4:8-9Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me-- practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
