MIRACLE (46) By B.B.John
During His arrest in Luke 22: 50 - 51, Jesus healed and restored the severed ear of the servant of the high priest, named Malchus (John 18: 10). This is a great miracle we need to examine.
Judas had invaded Gethsemane with a multitude armed with swords and clubs to arrest his Master. His given sign to sell Jesus was a kiss but when he drew near Jesus to kiss Him, he was sharply rebuked for wanting to give a sign of love for treachery.
"But Jesus said to him, Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" (Luke 22: 48)
When other disciples saw what was happening, they were ready to fight.
"... Lord, shall we strike with the sword?"
Before Jesus could answer, Peter raised his sword and cut off Malchus' right ear. But Jesus stopped the resistance.
"So Jesus said to Peter, 'Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?" (John 18:11)
"But Jesus answered and said, Permit even this." - meaning 'No more of this.' (Luke 22: 51)
Jesus then proceeded by touching the man's ear and restored it. He possibly recreated the severed ear of the high priest's servant. That's a show of love for His enemy - a radical demonstration of love for one's hardened enemy.
LESSONS
This Jesus’ last recorded miracle before He went to the cross has some lessons for us:
1. Be calm in the face of oppositions and threatening enemies.
2. Avoid unnecessary resistance and violence when officers of law come to arrest you, for any reason.
3. Show compassion for your enemy. Learn to respond with mercy.
4. Don't hesitate to heal and restore the wounded man, even if he's the one send to arrest you.
Main Texts
Luke 22: 50 -52
John 19: 10 - 11
Memory Verse
Luke 22: 51
