MIRACLE (48) By B.B.John
I discovered four important lessons we need to learn from the man who was sick for 38 years.
LESSON 1:
The Bethesda Pool was a home of thousands of invalids – ‘the sick, blind, lame, and paralyzed - who came to receive healing for their diverse troubles. It was a supernatural spot because a certain angel regularly visited and stirred up the water and when the angels stirred up the water, healing was dispensed for the first person to step into the pool.
"For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water was made well of whatever disease he had." (vs. 4b)
The first lesson is this: The Holy Spirit’s touch turns ordinary to extraordinary. The anointing turns natural water to supernatural, for healing, deliverance and multiple blessings.
LESSON 2
At the pool of Bethesda, a certain man waited for 38 years. He made frantic efforts to secure his healing, but all to no avail. He even sought for helpers each time the angel visited the pool but none came to his rescue.
The story of this man conveys to us the futility of trusting in ourselves and human efforts. We must know that true healing comes from Christ, not human efforts or occult rituals. Trusting and seeking Jehovah Rapha is finest wisdom to have.
LESSON 3:
At a time when the sick man had lost hope, Jesus visited him with a miracle. Jesus stormed the pool of Bethesda, went straight to the man, and challenged him to faith.
"When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been in that condition for a long time, He said to him, ‘Do you want to be made well?" vs.6b
But all that the sick man had was story, no faith. Nevertheless, after he had finished relating his gory story, Jesus commanded and he was healed.
"Jesus said to him, Rise, take up your bed and walk." Vs. 8
Jesus came on the scene and the man's 38 years of affliction ended suddenly. His long battle ended in
victory.
The third lesson is this: When God visits the afflicted, He comes with mercy and sudden miracles. So, it’s not how long our troubles have been with us and not how big our faith is; it is how great God’s mercy is.
LESSON 4:
After the man’s miraculous healing, the Pharisees, whose absorption was the Sabbath law, confronted him and said, ‘It is the Sabbath day; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.’ [vs.10] But the healed man’s referred them back to the grace and authority of Jesus Christ – ‘He answered them, ‘He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk’.
By his testimony, he ignored tradition, broke limitations and embraced the miraculous.
Here's the last lesson: If we must retain our miracles and testimonies, we must ignore traditions and limitations that clash with Christ's authority and mercy. Jesus is greater than all.
