THE ADVENT TRUTH.

August 20th

Most Christians have been taught two lies about death and hell: (1) when you die you go straight to heaven or hell, and (2) the wicked burn forever in endless torment. Neither of those ideas come from the Bible — they come from pagan philosophy and medieval tradition.

The Bible teaches the dead are asleep until the resurrection. Ecclesiastes 9:5 says: “The dead know not anything.” Jesus Himself called death “sleep” in John 11 when speaking about Lazarus. If people go straight to heaven or hell when they die, what’s the point of a resurrection or final judgment? The very fact that the Bible teaches both proves the dead are resting, awaiting that day.

And hell? Scripture is clear. Romans 6:23: “The wages of sin is death” — not eternal life in fire. Malachi 4:1 says the wicked will be burned up, leaving them neither root nor branch. Revelation 20 calls it the second death. Eternal hellfire is not eternal life in torment; it’s eternal destruction.

Think about it: a God who tortures sinners forever is no different from the cruelest tyrant in history. That doctrine makes Satan look merciful compared to God! But the Bible’s teaching reveals God’s true character. He is love. His judgment is just. He brings sin and sinners to an end — not keeps them alive forever in agony. That’s not love, that’s cruelty.

The good news? Death is only a sleep for the righteous until Jesus wakes them up. The wicked will be judged, burned up, and gone forever. Sin will never rise again (Nahum 1:9). That’s real justice, and that’s the hope of the gospel.

You’ve been lied to about death and hell. The truth is so much better — it’s merciful, it’s just, and it actually makes sense.
