All Hail.

Guinness World Records states that the heaviest hailstones fell on April 14, 1986, in Bangladesh, weighing up to two pounds and killing 92 people. As “the LORD rained hail on the land of Egypt” (Exodus 9:23) under its seventh plague, so will the seventh and final plague likewise do at the end of the world. Today’s verses, however, tell us that hail will strike the earth “about the weight of a talent.” A talent weighs approximately 66 pounds. This is record-breaking hail!

Does this verse seem familiar to you? Indeed, you’ve already read something similar in Revelation 6, in reference to the Second Coming: “And every mountain and island was moved out of its place” (v. 14). Yes, today’s verse is describing that same time, the time of Christ’s return, when those who had just been gathered to attack God’s people will flee into “the caves and … rocks of the mountains” (v. 15) and long for death (v. 16). And God will grant them their desire.

Some with the mark of the beast will inevitably expire under this boulder-sized hail. But those who do not will do what they have previously done: They will blaspheme God. Three times under the seven last plagues, Revelation tells us that those who have chosen to side with the devil blaspheme the Almighty (16:9, 11).

Without a doubt, the Bible is making clear that these people will have etched upon their hearts an unmistakable, irreversible hatred of God. Plague after plague, though their situation grows more and more dire and though they grow more and more powerless, to the end, they will continue to rebel against their Maker.

Notice that today’s verse additionally corresponds to Revelation 11:19 in that both mention the falling of “great hail.” We previously pointed out that Revelation 11:19 indicates the close of probation. The “great hail” is the result of that close, the judgment that comes from that judging. Today’s verses conclude the massive convulsion the planet undergoes at the second coming.

Righteous Judge, may I fall on You, Christ the Rock, and “be broken,” instead of being ground “to powder” (Matthew 21:44).

For Further Study: Joshua 10:11; Isaiah 30:30; Ezekiel 38:22
