Good morning to everyone. Grace and peace be with you.
With all traumatic events that happen in our lives, once the adrenaline has worn off and the initial shock of the situation is gone, we spend the next however long reliving the events and trying to make it make sense. In the moment you are able to describe, kind of, what happened, but when you revisit the scene … the optics do not make sense. Questions and theories create a circus in your mind as you try to make what you see match what you thought happened. When they do not line up, it becomes the puzzle that must be solved. This is the case with our ATV accident.
The only part of my body that hurt afterwards was my right hip. At first it made no sense because I was on my left side. Our son explained that I must have hit and rolled. (stop, drop, and roll thought). Makes sense. However … here come the other pieces. Nothing else on my hurt…only my hip. How do you land on your side and only your hip hurt. I was not arguing because I thankful, but the fixer in my head kept up the question. Next, the areas of my granddaughter that were hurt were inconsistent. She had a mark on the right side of the bridge of her nose, her ribs hurt, her shoulder hurt, and a scrape on her right knee. Where they were all on her right side, none of the injuries were big. Again, not upset but still trying to make it make sense.
She and I walked out to the crash site yesterday and I made the mention (in English) that the down corn did not make sense to me from where the obvious place for the ATV was demonstrated and where they said they found my glasses and how my glasses got damaged the way they did. She understood my confusion and explained (in German and hand motions) that we landed on the edge of the field and the ATV kept going and stopped where the big part was down. So now came the question … how?
After we walked back to the house, the ATV was ready for another run. She had asked that her daddy to take her first and then me. But this time we would go very slow. Her daddy took her back out to the crash site and they had a conversation. Then she and I went on a ride together, very slow, in the backyard only, at her request. We chatted and went back to where daddy and Opa were. As we discussed the walk, and the two rides, we have discerned that God most definitely took the wheel of the ATV. The area where we ride is like a fire break between a creek and the field. The drop to the creek is about 6-8 feet, the creek is low and not cleaned out. When the ATV popped the wheelie, she yanked the handlebars to the left sending us into the field, she told her dad that she did not want to go down the hill. As we headed into the field, I grabbed her with all my might and yanked us off the machine. WE landed at the edge of the field and ATV landed about four rows in. With this image in mind, the injuries sustained started to make more sense. Her head had to of hit my glasses as I pulled her off and we hit the ground, because my glasses have an inward curve to them now. Her ribs hurt from my arms pulling her off and us hitting the ground. Best guess for her shoulder and knee is the impact. The bridge of her nose is still a mystery. We thought at first my glasses, but nothing on my glasses match the mark…so she must have gotten that one from the corn.
As the days continue, my right ribs are now starting to hurt when I take a deep breath or cough. This, in my mind, is consistent with my impact of holding a child while disembarking a moving vehicle.
There is not doubt in my mind that God showed me the kill switch right before the accident and ignored him. There is no doubt in my mind that when the ATV took off that he did not grab her hand and steer us into the field. There is no doubt in my mind that he wrapped my arms around her and pulled us to safety. There is no doubt in my mind that these additional injuries are for my benefit to remember his mercy. There is no doubt, that if we had gone into the creek, I would not be typing this right now.
This incident has taught my family an enormous amount. It has shown that we are solid in Him. That our faith has not waivered. That we have demonstrated our hearts to Him in such a manner that He knows that we are his and that He will protect us from the enemy. When you have that knowledge, the peace that comes with it is indescribable.
I am so thankful that I am who He made me to be. That I pray daily. That I give him all the glory. He is the only reason that the injuries that we sustained were minor and the bond that is now in my family is soo much stronger. Thank you Jesus.
Be blessed today my friends.
