Good morning to everyone. Grace and peace be with you.
The last short story that I submitted for competition was a 250-word in-your-face face of the trumpets sounded, and now we must face the judgement. We are now past the initial head-to-head battles between peers and now we are in the final judging arena. At this point in the competition, we can now share our story in what is called the Debrief. That is where we can all see who our competition is, read their stories, and offer best of luck and any feedback that we see as author friends. It is a great place to kind of network with other authors. Or we can keep our pieces to ourselves.
I always share my stories because I want the feedback. I want to hear what other authors see in my writing. Thus far, the negative feedback that I have received has been focused on the mechanical side … grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
There have been some really ‘face palm’ comments and a lot of ‘I really liked your story’. Mostly, I get the ‘what an interesting interpretation of the prompts’. I think the last one is in the same category as a southerner saying, ‘bless your heart’. Haha.
This time, there is a different connection. This time, the comments are very complementary. Some have stated that this story was ‘lyrical’, and they could ‘feel’ the arena that I (God) created. This … this right here is why I write in these competitions … to touch lives.
To be perfectly honest, I was about to step away from the competition scene that I am in because the entry fees were rising and the ‘feel’ did not seem to be right. They were too secular for me to touch. Then this one popped up that I had forgotten I had entered. I actually wrote four or five variations of the prompts before settling on the entry I submitted. It felt like every time I finished one, He gave me a new idea. Then he gave me the ONE. He basically invited me to quit tap dancing around the topic and write.
In these competitions I have been able to grow as a writer. See things in different lights. Adapt to the oddest of scenarios. And honestly, secure my roots of faith even firmer. Because I use all the prompts to give Him glory … to lead others to Him … I have grown closer. The ‘feel’ of secular untouchable areas … that was the enemy trying to stop me … he saw that I was reaching people through my writing in this realm, and he did not like it. He almost got me … but … my God is more convincing. Just saying.
What arena in your life have you been focused on and ‘you’ do not see the fruit that you are producing? What aspect of your walk are you doubting you even belong on that path? What are you thinking about stopping because you don’t think God is with you and you made this decision on your own? What target is the enemy trying to stop you from hitting?
Today, I encourage you to take a few moments…several times today at different times … talk to Him and ask him to fortify your stamina and guide you. Frequently I ask Him for colorful maps for a child so that I can understand and to please use pretty pictures to help guide me. He does … in one form or another. Trust that He will answer and stand firm because the enemy knows you are making progress, and he does not like it.
Be blessed today my friends.
***Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the Lord has been good to you. – Psalm 116:7
