THE SABBATH TRUTH

August 30th

In Ezekiel 8–9, God gave the prophet a vision of the abominations taking place among His professed people. Step by step, Ezekiel was shown greater and greater sins—idols in the temple, leaders bowing to false gods, women weeping for Tammuz, and finally the greatest abomination of all: men turning their backs to the temple of the Lord and worshiping the sun toward the east (Ezekiel 8:16). This act of sun worship was the last straw. Immediately in chapter 9, God’s judgment fell, and only those who had the mark upon their foreheads—the seal of God—were spared (Ezekiel 9:4–6).

This is not just an ancient story. The same issue is repeated at the end of time. The Sabbath, God’s true sign of loyalty and memorial of Creation (Exodus 20:8–11; Ezekiel 20:12, 20), has been replaced in much of the Christian world with Sunday—the “day of the sun.” Just as Israel of old turned their backs on the temple of God to face the rising sun, so today multitudes turn their backs on the commandment of God to honor a tradition rooted in pagan sun worship.

The principle is the same: to exalt man’s day above God’s day is to give homage not to the Creator, but to the created order and to the powers that promoted sun worship in the first place (Romans 1:25). Revelation 13 and 14 make it clear that in the last days, the great issue will again be worship—true worship of the Creator on His Sabbath, versus false worship connected with the beast and his image. Those who stand faithful will receive the seal of God, while those who yield to the counterfeit receive the mark of the beast.

Ezekiel’s vision is a warning. When professed believers unite in worship that God has not commanded, judgment follows. But the faithful remnant—those who “sigh and cry” for the abominations—will be sealed and preserved.

Sunday worship, in principle, is nothing less than modern sun worship. The question is simple: Will we turn our backs on God’s temple, His law, and His Sabbath—or will we stand with those who are sealed with the mark of the living God?
