No Other Gods
Scripture
Exodus 20:3 (NKJV)
You shall have no other gods before Me.
Undivided Devotion
This is the first of the Ten Commandments, given by God to Israel at Mount Sinai. It establishes the foundation for the entire covenant relationship: God alone is to be worshiped. He delivered His people from Egypt and therefore demands their full allegiance.
To have no other gods means wholehearted devotion. It means not allowing idols, false beliefs, or anything else to compete with the one true God. While we may not bow to carved images today, we can still be tempted to place money, success, relationships, or self at the center of our lives.
This command is not just about prohibition but about relationship. God calls His people to Himself, desiring undivided love and loyalty. Jesus echoed this truth when He said the greatest commandment is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.
Reflection Questions
1. Is there anything in my life that competes with my devotion to God?
2. Do I place Him first in my decisions, priorities, and desires?
3. How can I actively express love for God above all else today?
Prayer
Lord God, help me to give You my full devotion. Reveal any idols in my heart and remove them. Teach me to love You with all that I am and to put nothing before You. Thank You for being the only true God who deserves all my worship. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
