Serving Out of Love

Scripture

Exodus 21:6 (NKJV)
Then his master shall bring him to the judges. He shall also bring him to the door, or to the doorpost, and his master shall pierce his ear with an awl; and he shall serve him forever.

A Willing Servant

This verse describes the law for Hebrew servants. After six years they were free to go, but if a servant loved his master and his household, he could choose to stay. The sign of this decision was the piercing of the ear at the doorpost, marking him as a servant for life.

This points us to a deeper truth about our relationship with God. True service is not forced but chosen. When we experience the love of our Master, we willingly give our lives in obedience to Him. Our freedom is found not in leaving His service but in surrendering to it.

Jesus calls us to be willing servants. Just as Paul described himself as a bondservant of Christ, we too are invited to serve God out of love and devotion.

Reflection Questions

1. Do I serve God because I feel I have to or because I love Him?

2. In what ways can I demonstrate my willing surrender to Christ today?

3. How does my service reflect gratitude for what He has done for me?

Prayer

Lord God, thank You for calling me not to forced service but to willing devotion. Teach me to serve You out of love, not duty. Pierce my heart with Your truth and help me live as a willing servant for life. In Jesus name, Amen.
