Bible Study: God’s Design for Time, Rest, and Focus

Da Good News Bible Study

Introduction

Today, we live in a world that glorifies busyness, multitasking, and rushing. We often think the more we do, the more we achieve. But God has shown us that His way is different. Stress, burnout, high blood pressure, and anxiety are often the fruit of living outside of His rhythm. God gave us a blueprint in the beginning of creation and through the life of Jesus. Let’s explore it.

1. God’s Blueprint in Creation

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” – Genesis 1:1

God could have spoken all things into existence in one instant, but instead He created one day at a time (Genesis 1:3–31).

On the seventh day, He rested. Not because He was tired (Isaiah 40:28 says God never grows weary), but as an example for humanity (Genesis 2:2–3).

Hebrew word for “rested” = שָׁבַת (shabath) = to cease, stop, pause. God modeled intentional pausing.

Lesson: Rest is not laziness. It’s godly. Multitasking was never God’s design.

2. Jesus’ Example of Focused Living

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed.” – Mark 1:35

Jesus never rushed. He was never distracted. He said: “I only do what I see the Father doing” (John 5:19).

He moved step by step: healing one person, teaching one crowd, dining with one family.

Greek word for “time” = χρόνος (chronos) (measured/clock time) and καιρός (kairos) (appointed/seasonal time). Jesus lived in kairos—God’s appointed timing.

Lesson: We are called to live with focus, prayer, and purpose—not frantic multitasking.

3. The Cost of Busyness

Modern stress, burnout, high blood pressure, and even sickness often come from living outside God’s order.

Proverbs 14:30 – “A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.”

Ecclesiastes 2:22–23 – “What do people get for all the toil and anxious striving… All their days their work is grief and pain; even at night their minds do not rest.”

Lesson: When we chase “doing everything,” we gain nothing. Peace brings health, while anxiety drains life.

4. Time vs. Money: God’s Perspective

“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” – Psalm 90:12

The world says: “Time is money.” But God revealed: “Money is time.”

Money can always be regained. You can lose it and make it back.

But time—once it’s lost, it’s gone forever.

Hebrew word for “time” = עֵת (‘et) = a season, appointed moment. God gives us seasons, not just minutes.

Ephesians 5:15–16 – “Be careful how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity (kairos), because the days are evil.”

Lesson: Value time more than money. Guard it. Invest it in what is eternal.

5. God’s Solution: One Thing at a Time

Psalm 46:10 – “Be still, and know that I am God.”

Matthew 6:34 – “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Jesus said to Martha: “You are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is necessary.” (Luke 10:41–42).

Lesson: Like God in creation, and like Jesus in His ministry, do one thing at a time in God’s order. Rest. Focus. Trust.

Conclusion: A Call to Action

God did not multitask in creation.

Jesus did not live rushed.

Stress and sickness are often the fruit of carrying more than God asked.

Money can return, but time is eternal once gone.

The wisdom of God teaches us to focus on today, live in His rhythm, and trust Him with tomorrow.

Practical Steps

1. Prioritize prayer – start each day as Jesus did (Mark 1:35).

2. Do one thing at a time – follow God’s creation model.

3. Rest weekly – embrace Sabbath as a rhythm, not a rule.

4. Value time over money – invest in eternity (Matthew 6:19–21).

5. Guard your health – peace is life, stress destroys.

Final Word: Even God didn’t multitask. Even God rested. Will you trust Him enough to slow down and follow His order for your life?
