The Wall of Resistance

“By my God I can leap over a wall.” 2 Samuel 22:30
As I was praying, I became painfully aware I had abandoned a spiritual practice God had taught me. Frustrated, I cried out to understand why I could run in His teaching for so long and then quit.
I will soon explain to you the wall of resistance you are hitting, the heavenly answer came. His thought, impressed upon my mind, was stunning. Exactly! That’s it! That’s how I feel—like I hit a wall! My problem was unresolved, yet I was comforted. God would soon share the solution.
For two weeks, I earnestly prayed He would explain the “wall of resistance.” One morning, I boldly confessed 2 Corinthians 3:18 as an affirmation: “Thank You, Father, that I am beholding in Your Word, as in a mirror, Your glory—Your character—and that I am being transformed into Your image from glory to glory, from one level of Your character to the next, by the power of Your Holy Spirit.”
My eyes stung hot and sorrow poured forth in tears. I was calling “those things which do not exist as though they did.” Romans 4:17. My Christian walk was not advancing—I needed help to get beyond that mysterious wall blocking my way.
With solemn, heart-rending humility, I sought the Lord, and suddenly, a scene appeared in my mind. I saw a huge illuminated staircase ascending to Heaven. Each step was exceedingly high, and all were drawn out a great distance in length, as well. There I was, running along one of the lower steps, glancing back over my shoulder, and without warning, whack—I hit a wall!
What is it, Lord? What is this wall I am hitting?
Every time you hit the wall, it is a wall of self-preservation! You’re headed in the right direction, but looking back to self. Turn full-faced to Me, child. Keep your eyes on Me!
The Lord caused me to understand that each step represented another level of His glory—His character. I surveyed the situation in my mind. Looking upward, I realized the wall was actually the front side of the next step. I gasped at the size of it, which was at least ten times taller than I was. It was humanly impossible to climb it.
How do I get over the wall, Lord? How do I reach the next step?
To scale the wall of self-preservation—to become more like Me—you must be willing to give up more of self-interests. You must be willing to surrender to Me. Take My hand, and I will lift you up.
Only by our God can we leap over the wall.
