Devotion: The Battle for Appetite in the Last Days
“Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron… forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving…” 1 Timothy 4:1–3
Appetite has always been one of Satan’s sharpest weapons. It was through appetite that he deceived Eve in Eden (Genesis 3:6), and it was appetite that Christ overcame in the wilderness when He refused to turn stones into bread (Matthew 4:3–4).
“As we near the close of time, Satan’s temptation to indulge appetite will be more powerful and more difficult to overcome.” Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 59
Today, unhealthy habits are not just personal struggles; they are part of a global system of temptation. Fast food, processed meats, sugary drinks, and addictive stimulants are everywhere. While they appeal to taste, they weaken the body, cloud the mind, and dull spiritual sensitivity.
Science confirms this truth: Studies show that high consumption of processed and fatty foods is linked to chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes (WHO, 2021). Sugary beverages are proven to increase risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes (Harvard School of Public Health, 2020). The indulgence that feels harmless today is preparing minds and bodies to be less resistant to greater temptations tomorrow.
The last great conflict is not only about laws and worship; it is about self-control versus indulgence. Those who fail to govern appetite may also fail to stand in greater spiritual tests. But those who, through Christ’s strength, discipline their desires, are preparing to endure the final crisis.
Christ gained victory over appetite in the wilderness so we, too, may overcome. Every meal is a test. Every choice between flesh foods and wholesome grains, between sugary drinks and pure water, between gluttony and temperance, is part of the preparation for eternity.
How can this be applicable?
• Pray for strength daily to choose healthful foods and resist Satan’s subtle temptations.
• Practice temperance: Eat slowly, simply, and in moderation.
• Reform gradually but firmly: Replace meat, sugary drinks, and fried foods with fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains.
• Remember the end-time focus: Every choice strengthens either the flesh or the spirit.
“To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.” Revelation 3:21
Heavenly Father, we are living in solemn times. Help us to resist the enemy’s temptations to indulge appetite. Purify our bodies and minds that we may stand in the final conflict with clear thoughts and willing hearts. May Christ’s victory over appetite in the wilderness be our victory today. In His name we pray, Amen.
