MIRACLE (3) – By B.B. John

In Matthew 9: 16-17, Jesus uses the parables of the garment patching and wineskins to unveil the incompatibility between the old covenant and the new. It warns us against mixing the law and traditions with grace and new life found in Jesus.

In today's teaching, I have two important points for you to observe:

One, Christianity isn't about repairing or patching up religion.

Christianity is about having the new life in Jesus Christ. And just like a new garment that is patches on an old cloth rent, trying to patch up the new life of Christ onto old religious traditions will tear you away and makes you worse.

Jesus came not to repair Judaism or any other religions. He came not to reform the old covenant but to establish the new. (Hebr. 8: 6- 13).) Jesus gives the new life - the eternal life. Not religion.

"No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse." (Matt. 9: 16)

Two, the new wine of the Holy Ghost requires new covenant vessels.

Stop trying to get the Spirit's power and fullness while you are still holding onto old religious system, traditions or mindset. For, just like wine stored in animal skins used to expand and burst when we try to fill them with new fermented wine, you - a old bottle of religious law and traditions will burst and waste away. Stop trying to patch up your religious life with the new Spirit's life and power.

"Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved." (Matt. 9:17)

To experience true spiritual transformation, we must let go of old religious systems, traditions, and mindsets. The Holy Spirit requires hearts that are made new—flexible, yielded, and ready to carry His fresh work. The Christian life becomes real and powerful only when we live as new covenant vessels filled with the Spirit’s life and power (Acts 1:8; 2:1–4; Ezekiel 36:26).
