Kids Sermon: The #Amazing #Power Tool in Your #Mouth!
(Begin by gathering the children at the front.)
Hello, everyone! I am so excited to see you all this morning! I want to talk about something you all have with you right now. It's a super powerful tool, and it's hiding in your mouth! Can you guess what it is?
(Let them guess. They might say "teeth!" or "saliva!" Eventually, stick out your tongue.)
That's right! It's your TONGUE! Now, it might look small and silly, but the Bible tells us it's one of the most powerful things we have!
1. The Tongue's POWER (The Problem)
The Bible says something pretty amazing about our tongues. Can you all flex your arm and show me your muscles? Wow! Strong! But listen to what James 3:5 says:
"...the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark." (James 3:5, NIV)
Whoa! Our tongue is like a tiny spark that can start a huge forest fire! How does it do that? Has your tongue ever...
· Said a mean word that made someone cry? (That's like a spark of fire).
· Told a lie? (Another spark).
· Whined or complained all day? (More sparks!)
· Used God's name not in prayer, but in an angry or silly way? (That's not giving Him glory).
When we use our tongues this way, it can hurt people and make God sad. It's like we're using this amazing power tool for the wrong job—like using a Firehouse to spray mud on a clean wall!
2. The Tongue's PURPOSE (The Solution)
But God didn't give us this powerful tool to cause trouble! He gave it to us for something incredible. The Bible tells us the main job for our tongue.
The book of Psalms is full of songs, and King David used his tongue to sing to God all the time! He says in Psalm 35:28:
"My tongue will proclaim your righteousness, your praises all day long." (Psalm 35:28, NIV)
"Proclaim" is a big word that means to shout it out and tell everyone! So, the main job of our tongue is to GIVE GLORY TO GOD!
"Giving glory" just means telling everyone how amazing, wonderful, powerful, and good God is!
So, how can we use our tongues to give God glory?
· PRAISE: We can say, "God, you are awesome! Thank you for my family! I love you, Jesus!" That gives God glory!
· PRAYER: We can use our tongue to talk to God. That gives Him glory!
· POSITIVE WORDS: We can use our tongue to say kind things like, "You did a great job!" or "I forgive you." When we are kind, we show people God's love, and that gives Him glory!
· PROCLAIMING: We can use our tongue to tell our friends, "Jesus loves you!" That gives God SO much glory!
3. Let's Use Our Tongues Together!
Our tongue is a powerful tool. We can choose to use it to start fires and hurt people, OR we can choose to use it for its best job: giving glory to God!
Let's practice using our tongues for their best job right now. Let's all say this together:
"God, you are great! We use our tongues for you!"
(Have them say it with you, maybe even a few times loudly and proudly!)
Awesome! Now you're using your power tool the right way!
Let's Pray:
Dear God, thank you for our tongues! Please help us to remember how powerful they are. Help us to use our words carefully. We want to use our tongues to praise you, to pray to you, to say kind things, and to tell others about your love. Help us to give glory to you with every word we say! In Jesus' name, Amen!
