IF THE DEVIL DOESN’T HAVE AUTHORITY OVER A BELIEVER, WHY ARE THEY STILL BROKE?

One of the most confusing questions many Christians wrestle with is this: If the devil has been defeated, if Jesus has given us power and authority over him, why do so many believers still struggle with poverty and lack?

The Bible is very clear — the devil has no legal authority over a child of God. Jesus declared in Luke 10:19, “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” This means that Satan cannot simply decide you will remain broke or poor. But if that is true, what then explains the financial struggles many Christians face?

Let us look at some possible reasons:

1. Ignorance of God’s Word

Authority is useless if you don’t know you have it. Hosea 4:6 says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” Many believers know Jesus died for their sins but are not aware that He also redeemed them from poverty (2 Corinthians 8:9). Without the knowledge of God’s promises and how to apply them, the enemy takes advantage of ignorance.

2. Wrong Mindset

Even though a believer is saved, their mindset may still be shaped by past experiences, poverty culture, or fear of lack. Proverbs 23:7 reminds us, “As he thinketh in his heart, so is he.” A person can be spiritually rich but mentally poor. Until the mind is renewed with God’s Word, financial struggles may continue.

3. Disobedience to God’s Principles

God set spiritual laws in place for prosperity: giving, tithing, diligence, stewardship, and integrity. A believer who ignores these principles may remain broke, not because the devil is powerful, but because disobedience closes the door to God’s blessings. Malachi 3:10-11 shows us how obedience in giving not only brings provision but also rebukes the devourer.

4. Lack of Discipline and Planning

Sometimes, it’s not a spiritual issue but a practical one. Overspending, debt, laziness, or lack of planning can keep a Christian broke. Proverbs 21:5 says, “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.” God gives us wisdom, but it is our responsibility to manage resources well.

5. Spiritual Warfare

Although the devil has no authority, he still tries to hinder and resist God’s blessings (Daniel 10:12-13). This is why believers must stand firm in prayer and warfare, enforcing the victory of Christ. We don’t fight to gain victory, we fight from the position of victory already won by Jesus.

Final Thoughts

Being broke as a believer does not mean the devil is stronger than you. It simply means there are areas of knowledge, obedience, or discipline that must be addressed. The devil is already defeated, but we must actively walk in the victory Jesus gave us.

Poverty is not your inheritance — abundant life in Christ is. Renew your mind, obey God’s principles, pray with authority, and manage resources wisely. You will see that financial breakthrough is possible, not because of your strength, but because of Christ who strengthens you.
