From Science to Faith: Dr. Ming Wang’s Journey from Atheist to Believer
Dr. Ming Wang, a world-renowned, Harvard-trained ophthalmic surgeon and a pioneer in laser eye surgery, grew up during China’s Cultural Revolution in an officially atheistic society and initially believed only in science. He came to the United States as an atheist but underwent a profound transformation while studying the human eye in medical school. Fascinated by its precise and intricate design, Wang recognized that the complexity and near-perfect function of the eye could not plausibly arise from random chance. He concluded, “The reason the human eye, being so complicated, can form nearly perfectly most of the time, is because it did not form out of randomness. It was formed with a purpose—there is a Creator and Designer behind it.”
A pivotal moment came during a conversation with a Christian professor, who asked Wang if random pieces of metal could ever form a functioning car—and then posed the same question about the far more complex human eye. This analogy opened Wang’s mind to the possibility of a Creator. Recognizing a designer was only the first step; it took him several more years to move from acknowledging a Creator to personally embracing Jesus Christ.
Dr. Wang is also the founder of the Wang Vision Institute in Nashville, Tennessee, and the Wang Foundation, which provides free eye surgeries for those in need, reflecting his commitment to combining medical innovation with compassionate service. His journey of faith, combining scientific insight with spiritual discovery, inspired the feature film Sight, released in May 2024. His story has become a powerful testimony to how scientific wonder can lead to spiritual awakening and a personal relationship with God.
