The Proper Wardrobe

By Deborah Shaffer September 11th

“Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.” Hebrews 13:15

Hmm, what shall I wear today? I’m pretty sure the answer to that question depends on what I am planning on doing or where I’m going. If I must be outside, I better dress warmly if it’s cold, wear something that will protect me if it’s raining, or wear something to shield me from the blazing rays of the sun. Whether it’s the usual work uniform or comfy clothes of relaxation, our attire should reflect our environment.

Did you know that there’s a proper wardrobe to come into the presence of God? No, I am not talking about going out and buying special clothes to wear to church to impress God or other people. Our outward appearance does not impress God. So what is this special outfit we need?

It’s the garment of praise! Isaiah 61:3 says that God’s Spirit wants to give us “the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.” The Holy Spirit wants to change our wardrobe! He wants to take away our cloaks of despair, depression, hopelessness—all emotions that pull

us into heaviness of soul—and replace them with praise for God!

When we come into God’s presence with an attitude of praise and hope, joy will begin to flow within us. When we worship God with a sacrifice of praise (because at times, it is a sacrifice to just begin), we are reminded that God is all-powerful, all-able, merciful, and worthy to be praised! Our eyes are taken off of our problem, and we put ourselves into the hands of a God who is eager to raise us up out of our pit of despair. As I read once, “Don’t just take tea breaks throughout the day... take praise breaks!”

I think that is very good advice. Today, begin by praising God for His attributes, who He is. He is the “Great I Am,” able to do anything! He is the “Alpha and Omega”—the Beginning and the End! No unjust action will escape His judgment in His timing! He is our Loving Father, ready to hold us close in time of despair, always there for us. He is the Ultimate Giver, holding nothing back from us, giving us His only Son, Jesus Christ, so we can come into His presence. There is so much to praise Him for!

Go ahead. Get dressed for the day. But whatever you choose to wear, don’t forget to put on your garment of praise!
