THE ADVENT TRUTH
Sometimes our first reaction when someone attacks our faith is to get defensive, sarcastic, or even downright snarky. It’s human nature to want to “clap back” when someone mocks what we believe or twists Scripture to tear down the truth. But as followers of Jesus, we are called to live by a higher standard.
The Bible says in Romans 12:17-18, “Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.” This doesn’t mean we have to be doormats or stay silent when lies are being spread about God. Even Jesus confronted falsehood and hypocrisy, but He did it with wisdom, calm authority, and love—not with petty insults or worldly anger.
When someone comes at us, everything in our flesh might want to fire back with cutting words or to “win” the argument. But Galatians 5:22-23 reminds us that the fruit of the Spirit includes self-control. True strength isn’t in yelling the loudest or being the most clever; it’s in holding our tongue when necessary, answering with grace, and letting our character reflect Christ even when others are hostile.
Jesus said in Matthew 5:44, “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.” That is NOT easy—but it’s exactly what makes us stand out as His disciples. When the world sees us respond differently, they see the power of the Gospel at work.
So, next time someone attacks your beliefs, pause and pray. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your response. You don’t have to let people walk over you, but you also don’t have to lower yourself to the level of the flesh. By choosing to respond in love and truth, you reveal the heart of Jesus and plant seeds that arguments alone could never reach.
Let’s rise above the noise and reflect Christ in every word and action.
