Hurry Up and Wait.
By Lynette Jaque September 14th
“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah: 40:31
In this day and age of instant gratification, it can honestly be said that people hate waiting. Waiting in line, waiting for the copier at work, waiting for water to boil… all the little waits life demands of us can make us feel so put upon, trying our already thin patience. And long waits? Even worse!
Even in our prayer lives, we can find ourselves growing short on patience. Lord, I need it now! How long do I have to wait? Don’t You see it’s taking too long? God forbid we should grow so bold as to talk to our Heavenly Father like He’s a tardy delivery boy! The hustle-bustle of this life has caused us to become so demanding that we have forgotten the heavenly virtue that is patience.
“The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him. It is good that one should hope and wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.” Lamentations 3:25–26.
My home has seen two generations of children and to say patience has been a hot commodity is something of an understatement. I’ve prayed over each of my children, often while they were asleep, and over the years, despaired of some of their behaviors and choices they’ve made. Sometimes I’ve been tempted to think that maybe, just maybe, my kids are too much for a Mighty God! How presumptuous I would have been to not realize that the God of the Universe, the God who rescued me, would be too daunted by the task of preserving my children for His kingdom! I remember one time, as I watched a child of mine embark on a perilous path, I heard what seemed like the audible voice of God: Lynette, am I so small that I cannot protect your child? Immediately I was plunged into a state that was a heady blend of epiphany, shame, relief, and joy. Of course my God is big enough!
My prayers for my children, though spread over the last 34 years, have taken a tremendous toll on my patience, but not in the way you think. With each heartfelt prayer, each child uplifted, I am sure: I am sure that God hears my cries. I am sure that God will watch over my children, wherever they are. I am also sure—assured, if you will—that even if I don’t live to see the fruit of my supplications, God will honor the prayer of the committed, the persistent, the patient.
“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9 (NIV).
