Wax or Clay?

By Deborah Shaffer | September 15

“Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” Hebrews 3:15

Wax or clay…which one are you? The heat from the sun has different effects on various elements. It all depends on the material. The sun melts the wax and makes it pliable and useful. The same sun hardens dirt into useless clay.

I often wondered about passages in the Bible, like the one about Pharaoh, which stated, “God hardened his heart.” How did Pharaoh ever have a chance if God hardened his heart? It seemed unfair as if his fate was already determined.

But God is always fair, and I learned that it was the condition of his heart that made the difference. Then I had to ask myself what kind of heart do I have? Do I open my heart up to God so that when His Word is proclaimed, it melts like wax, making me pliable and useful to God? Or am I stiff-necked, rejecting every move on God’s part, and closing my heart and mind to the truth?

When God’s light shines down on us, our hearts will either melt or harden—it does not remain untouched. Does it cause us to surrender to Him, or do we reject His leading—becoming more obstinate, prideful, and self-sufficient? God calls us to be tenderhearted. He tells us not to harden

our hearts. We do have a choice in this.

God’s mercy and forgiveness are available to us all. He gave His Son, Jesus, so that we may know the truth and be set free. His blessings fall upon us all. Do we have eyes to see and acknowledge those truths? Do we have ears that hear His pleas? Do we have hearts that long for direction, correction, and truth?

“Happy is the man who is always reverent, but he who hardens his heart will fall into calamity.”

Proverbs 28:14

Wax or clay—we get to choose.
