THE ADVENT TRUTH

What Does the Bible REALLY Say About Death and Hell?

Many people believe these verses teach eternal torment, but when we slow down and examine them carefully, a different picture emerges.

Matthew 10:28 – Jesus says God can destroy both body and soul in hell. The Greek word for destroy is apollymi, meaning total annihilation, not endless torment. God’s justice ends sin completely, not keep it alive forever.

Matthew 25:41–46 – The “everlasting punishment” of the wicked is contrasted with “eternal life” for the righteous. Notice Jesus didn’t say “everlasting punishing.” The punishment is eternal in result—death that never ends.

Mark 9:43 – “The fire that shall not be quenched” doesn’t mean it never goes out. It means no one can put it out until it fully consumes the wicked—like the fires God sent on Jerusalem (Jeremiah 17:27), which eventually burned out after doing their job.

Jude 1:7 – Sodom and Gomorrah suffered “eternal fire.” Are they still burning today? No. The cities were completely destroyed, showing that “eternal fire” refers to complete and final judgment, not unending flames.

Revelation 14:10–11 – The wicked have “no rest day or night” while God’s wrath is poured out. This happens during their punishment, but it ends in the second death (Revelation 20:14).

Revelation 20:10 – The devil, beast, and false prophet are “tormented day and night forever.” The Greek phrase can mean “to the ages of ages,” showing complete, irreversible judgment. Notice verse 14 clarifies what happens next: Death and hell were cast into the lake of fire—this is the second death.

Luke 16:28 – The parable of the rich man and Lazarus uses figurative language to show that there’s no second chance after death. It isn’t a literal description of fiery torment.

Final Truth: The Bible teaches that the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23), not eternal life in torment. God’s fire is eternal in its results because once the wicked are destroyed, they are gone forever.

Jesus came so YOU don’t have to face that second death. Choose life today!
