The Helicopter in the Window

“For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayers.” 1 Peter 3:12
The wail of the ambulance siren pierces through the air, chilling me inside. I stand at the edge of the highway as it speeds by, bound for the nearest hospital. I close my eyes and pray, Lord, once again I come before Your throne of grace and pray for this person….
As I’m praying, my mind flashes back to a scene I’ll never forget. Annette had been diagnosed with breast cancer that had metastasized to her bones. She was a frequent patient at Good Samaritan Hospital, and since they were full to capacity, this time, she’d been assigned a small room on an upper floor with a narrow window and a drab view of the helipad below.
Sleep was impossible one evening, since the helipad seemed to be in constant demand, so Annette seized the opportunity to pray for those she did not know, but who, nevertheless, were in need of prayer. With each helicopter touchdown, she prayed for the sick and injured onboard.
She asked her daughter to help her into a wheelchair so she could watch them fly in. Back straight, eyes focused, her prayer already touching the portals of Heaven. Then suddenly, she turned in her wheelchair and said, “There’s one coming in, and this one is bad.”
“How do you know?” Cari asked.
“I know. I can feel it in my heart.”
Minutes passed, then came the wop, wop, wop sound of the rotor blades urgently slicing through the air. As the struts touched down, hospital staff rushed to transfer the accident victim to the emergency room. Annette watched as the victim emerged from the helicopter—their upper body encased in something that resembled a body cast, and their head wrapped in what was now red-tinted gauze.
My Lord, Annette prayed silently, I don’t know who’s being rushed in or why, but I know You love them with a boundless love, and Your heart is pained for the one being taken out of the helicopter and scuttled into the emergency room. Let Your angels surround this patient, let Your wisdom guide the staff working to save them, and may Your will be done in their life; in Jesus Name, Amen.
Though pain racked her fragile frame for months to come, she constantly prayed for the Life Flights she knew were continuing to arrive at that hospital. Her family placed a model helicopter in her window to give her a visual reminder of that night, that helicopter, and that patient.
There was so much pain, fear, sickness, and death in the world. But she knew that no matter her condition, someone needed her prayer, and that prayer would wing its way to Heaven and be heard by a God who weeps over His suffering Creation. Her faith in God’s love—even for those who ares unaware of the power of prayer—continues to inspire those of us who knew and loved her.
And Lord, I know the nurses told Annette that every single one of those for whom she’d prayed for lived. Please let my prayer be as effective, fervent, and blessed as those of my friend.
