An Illuminated Earth

However great the vision of the drunk harlot was, it is completely overshadowed by what John saw next. A fourth messenger, coming after the three angels of Revelation 14, descended to the earth. He is distinguished by “great authority” and “glory.”

We have seen what the devil’s authority will do. Upon being given to the two beasts (Revelation 13:2, 4, 5, 7, 12), the devil’s authority allows the formation of a religiopolitical system that persecutes God’s people and coerces universal worship.

But what does authority from heaven do? As Jesus said, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:18–20). God’s authority calls His people to share the gospel around the world.

When the fourth angel comes down with this authority, “his glory” is similarly shared around the world. The first angel’s message told us what it means to glorify God; it means to have Christ’s character reproduced in you. Glory is simply another word for God’s character. When Moses asked to see God’s “glory” (Exodus 33:18), God responded, “I will proclaim the name of the LORD” (v. 19). God then proceeded to describe His character to Moses (34:6, 7). We’ve already learned that name means character.

The fourth angel symbolically illustrates the end-time work of God’s people. They are to take up the great commission by demonstrating the end result of the gospel: individuals completely restored in the image of Christ. They are to “proclaim the praises of Him who called [them] out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9).

Through them, the whole world has the opportunity to fully see God’s character. The devil will darken men’s senses with the confusion of Babylon, but God will shine the light “in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6).

Light of the world, come into my heart today; transform me into Your glory for the whole world to witness.
