Babylon Is Fallen.
Today’s verse is an echo of the second angel’s message in Revelation 14. It contains a warning that has been called “The Loud Cry,” because it is given mightily with a loud voice. However, no new fall is being announced here.
What gives this angel’s message additional power not seen with that second angel? The answer: Babylon has grown desperately worse. It has become “a dwelling place of demons… and a cage for every unclean and hated bird!”
In 2 Thessalonians 2:11, 12, we see that God allows a “strong delusion … that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.” This delusion comes via the wine of Babylon; her false doctrines attract those who love and practice unrighteousness. Now, with Satan at its helm, his demons in its walls, and false shepherds converted to her cause, its terrible apostasy has become all-consuming and complete.
This same symbolism is found in the Old Testament. God said of Israel in the days of Jeremiah, “For among My people are found wicked men. … As a cage is full of birds, so their houses are full of deceit” (Jeremiah 5:26, 27). For this reason, God sent Babylon against them, which took those “birds” captive. When the proper time came, God called His people out of Babylon.
Now, at the end of time, we see the same process happening. Babylon serves as a snare to trap and expose false believers (Ezekiel 12:13; Hosea 7:12). Yet, some in Babylon do not belong there, and God calls them out to join His flock and be His witnesses. (See Isaiah 1:25, 26). “Behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and deep darkness the people; but the Lord will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you. The Gentiles shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising” (Isaiah 60:2, 3).
Father in heaven, give me the strength to stay faithful unto the end so that I may dwell in Your kingdom forever.
