THE ADVENT TRUTH

Many modern Christians want all the benefits God offers—eternal life, forgiveness, peace, blessings—but they refuse to yield their lives in obedience to Him. It’s like someone wanting the benefits of marriage—companionship, security, intimacy—while refusing to be faithful or show any real love to their spouse. That’s not a relationship; that’s selfishness.

Jesus compared His relationship with His people to a marriage. In Scripture, the church is called His bride (Ephesians 5:25-27; Revelation 19:7). Just like in a healthy marriage, there must be mutual love and commitment. Imagine a husband who constantly cheats, lies, and disrespects his wife, but still expects her to shower him with gifts and affection. Sadly, that’s how many treat God today—they want His blessings, but they don’t want to repent, surrender, or obey.

Jesus said plainly, “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Love is not just words or feelings; it’s action. 1 John 5:3 says, “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” Obedience isn’t a burden; it’s a response of love to the One who saved us.

But modern Christianity often preaches a cheap grace—a “Jesus as Savior” but not “Jesus as Lord” gospel. They want forgiveness but not transformation. They want heaven, but they don’t want to give up sin. They want to call God Father, while living like rebellious prodigals who never plan to come home.

This attitude is a sign of the last days. Paul warned in 2 Timothy 3:5 about people “having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.” They talk about grace, but deny its power to change their lives.

Revelation 14:12 paints a different picture of God’s faithful end-time people: “Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” True faith in Jesus always produces obedience, just like true love in marriage always produces faithfulness.

The question is, do we love Jesus enough to yield to Him? Or are we just using Him for what He can give us?
