LA COMMEMORAZIONE DI CHARLIE KIRK
21 settembre 2025. Ho seguito su YouTube in diretta la commemorazione (doverosa) di Charlie Kirk che, in Arizona, ha riempito un'intero stadio e seguiti a distanza da milioni di persone. Commovente per molti aspetti. Vi sono stati all'inizio chiari appelli evangelistici stile Billy Graham. Sono stati ribaditi giustamente concetti biblici che devono essere vissuti e promossi nell'ambito della società anche a livello politico da cristiani coraggiosi che non temono di essere criticati e pronti al sacrificio personale. E' stata ribadita la necessità di avere autorità politiche che onorino Dio, la sua legge morale e la misericordia evangelica.
Fiero di essere io stesso un cristiano "conservatore", voglio, però, distanziarmi in una certa qual misura dagli "entusiasti" che vedono nel movimento rappresentato da Charlie Kirk un risveglio tout-court del conservatorismo politico e religioso "di destra" osteggiato con veemenza dai suoi avversari. Credo sia necessario comunque mantenere un sano spirito critico che sappia discernere ciò che è evangelicamente buono e giusto da certe tipiche "americanate".
Non mi sono piaciuti nei discorsi che ho sentito i riferimenti acritici ad un'indistinta difesa della "civiltà occidentale". Non ho sentito parlare (mi è sfuggito?) un appello al ravvedimento dai suoi limiti, mali e degenerazioni. Non mi è piaciuto l'accentuare il vantato "ruolo storico" degli USA e la sua "eccezionalità" quasi messianica. Per quanto gli USA abbiano promosso alcuni valori cristiani importanti, il cristianesimo non è un prodotto "americano" e neanche solo europeo. Le tradizioni del cristianesimo orientale sono pure importanti, così come Dio ha lasciato significative testimonianze della verità rivelata anche in altre culture. Insomma, senza per questo unirci ai critici del pensiero rappresentato da Charlie Kirk, non rinunciamo ad un necessario discernimento. Onoriamo il coraggio di Charlie Kirk ma la fede cristiana ha "gambe per camminare" da sé senza doversi appoggiare a movimenti nazionalisti di qualsiasi tipo.

September 21, 2025. I watched live on YouTube the (well-deserved) commemoration of Charlie Kirk, held in Arizona, which filled an entire stadium and was followed remotely by millions of people. It was moving in many respects. At the beginning, there were clear evangelistic appeals in the style of Billy Graham. Biblical truths were rightly reaffirmed—truths that must be lived out and promoted in society, even at the political level, by courageous Christians who are unafraid of criticism and ready to make personal sacrifices. The need was emphasized for political authorities who honor God, His moral law, and the mercy of the Gospel.
As someone who is proud to call himself a “conservative” Christian, I nevertheless feel the need to distance myself somewhat from the “enthusiasts” who see in the movement represented by Charlie Kirk nothing less than a full-blown revival of right-wing political and religious conservatism, strongly opposed by its critics. I believe it is still necessary to maintain a healthy spirit of discernment—one that can distinguish what is truly good and right according to the Gospel from certain typical “Americanisms.”
What I did not appreciate in the speeches I heard were the uncritical references to a vague defense of “Western civilization.” I did not hear (or perhaps I missed it?) any call for repentance from its limitations, evils, and corruptions. I also did not appreciate the emphasis on America’s so-called “historic role” and its almost messianic “exceptionalism.” While it is true that the United States has promoted certain important Christian values, Christianity is neither an “American” nor merely a European product. The traditions of Eastern Christianity are equally significant, just as God has also left meaningful testimonies of His revealed truth within other cultures.
In short, without joining the chorus of critics who dismiss the vision represented by Charlie Kirk, we must not give up on necessary discernment.
