Jesus By the Sea

By John Dinzey September 22

“On the same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the sea.” Matthew 13:1

Jesus was a very busy man. As you read the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John you will notice that He went from town to town, healing the sick and preaching the gospel. He had a message for all, because all needed Him—and all of us need Him, today.

When someone is sick, the rest of the family sympathizes. Enter with me into a home where a child is sick; the look and weakness gives evidence to family and friends that death is near. Sorrow fills every heart. But Jesus is passing through this town and comes into the home, heals the child, and brings unspeakable joy to everyone in the house.

To those who were downcast, depressed, and hopeless, He spoke words of life that brought them hope, joyfulness, and the assurance that, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1.

His words and actions were unmistakable evidence that God’s love is real and that it is His desire to bless His children with good things. Those who had the privilege to be near Him and hear His messages could speak and live with greater assurance of God’s marvelous love and care for His children. As they read or heard the Scriptures, they seemed to be new and alive; and with renewed faith, they believed the promises were a direct message from God to them.

Concerning Jesus, the book Steps to Christ states, “Every soul was precious in His eyes. While He ever bore Himself with divine dignity, He bowed with the tenderest regard to every member of the family of God. In all men He saw fallen souls whom it was His mission to save.”

I’m sure you will agree that this made His life one of practically constant activity. But, due to the fact that He had become a human, like one of us, Jesus Himself needed time to be refreshed. He needed time to have communion with our heavenly Father, and on one of those occasions, Jesus did something I love to do—He went out of the house, and sat by the sea.

I don’t know if you’ve ever had an opportunity to do that, but it is a calming and refreshing experience. Just look at Jesus for a moment, sitting on the sand, looking out to the sea, the wind blowing slightly as He watches the waves become smaller and smaller, ending up close to where He is sitting.

He is at peace, in communion with God. And as you consider this moment, it may just be that you will feel His presence as He sits next to you.
