“For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.” Psalm 91:11
When I was in kindergarten, my mom had not gotten the notice that my school was going to be closed one Monday. So thinking I’d missed the bus, she asked a neighbor, who was a taxi driver, to take me to school. The driver dropped me off and left, but soon I discovered the school doors were locked and no one was there! I went to the front of the school to see if perhaps that door was open, but it was locked, too.
The school faced a very busy highway, and cars were whizzing by with just a chain-link fence between us. I could feel the wind from the cars as I stood there for a moment, thinking of what to do next. Then I remembered that Mom had always told me, “If you need help, just pray.”
I knelt by the flagpole and prayed, “Dear Jesus, please help me get back home,” and as I stood up, I heard the engine of a big truck around the corner, at the other end of the school. I ran over there and saw two men unloading coal. Believing Jesus was with me, I walked up to one of them and explained my situation. He was very kind and told me they would take me home.
Being shy and having been warned repeatedly by my mom never to talk to strangers or get into a vehicle with anyone, it surprises me today that I wasn’t worried or scared of them at all. But when the truck pulled up at my house, and my mother saw a big man covered in coal holding her little girl’s hand, she panicked for a moment!
As we neared the door, I still remember the exact words he said to my mom: “Ma’am, we have never delivered coal to that school on a Monday, and I have no idea why we were there today;” but my mom shared why she believed they were there! As he walked away, we knelt and thanked Jesus for His loving watchcare over me.
Psalm 91:11, “For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways,” was my grandma’s, my mom’s, and now one of my favorite Bible verses. If you’re ever in trouble and need help, just take a moment and pray. Jesus has an army of angels just waiting to come and help you.
