THE ADVENT TRUTH
Many Christians teach that when Jesus cried, “It is finished” on the cross, His entire work was completed. But according to the Bible and the sanctuary message, the cross was not the end of Christ’s work—it was the beginning of the fulfillment of God’s plan of salvation.
The earthly sanctuary, given to Moses, was a blueprint of the plan of redemption (Hebrews 8:5). It had two main phases of ministry:
1. The Daily Service (Courtyard & Holy Place): Sin offerings were brought to the sanctuary daily, showing how Jesus would die for our sins and intercede for us (John 1:29, Hebrews 7:25).
2. The Day of Atonement (Most Holy Place): Once a year, the high priest entered the Most Holy Place to cleanse the sanctuary and symbolically blot out the sins of God’s people (Leviticus 16).
When Jesus died on the cross, He completed the sacrifice phase — the courtyard work. This is why the temple veil tore in two (Matthew 27:51), showing that animal sacrifices were no longer needed. But just like the earthly priest moved into the sanctuary after the sacrifice, Jesus ascended into heaven to begin His intercessory ministry on our behalf (Hebrews 9:24).
Hebrews 8:1-2 tells us plainly: “We have such a High Priest… a Minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.” Jesus is now working in the heavenly sanctuary, applying the benefits of His blood to those who repent and believe.
In 1844, according to the prophecy of Daniel 8:14, Christ entered the Most Holy Place to begin the final work of judgment — cleansing the heavenly sanctuary and preparing a people to stand before Him without spot or blemish (Revelation 14:6-7).
So while the cross was perfect and complete as a sacrifice, the work of salvation is not finished until Jesus returns. Soon, Jesus will lay aside His priestly robes and return as King of Kings to take His people home.
