The Croaking of a Bullfrog
By Deborah Shaffer | September 25
“Those who see you will gaze at you, and consider you, saying: ‘Is this the man who made the earth tremble, who shook kingdoms, who made the world as a wilderness and destroyed its cities, who did not open the house of his prisoners?’” Isaiah 14:16–17
I tremendously enjoy living out in the country. One of my favorite pastimes is just doing nothing but quietly listening to all the wonderful sounds of nature—God’s Creation. When the sun has set and darkness begins to fall, there are many voices that come to life. The chirping of the crickets can become almost deafening. Where were they before darkness fell?
Many other booming pond voices suddenly break the silence. One of the boldest is the deep-throated croak of the bullfrog. Now, if you’re not accustomed to the sound of this amphibian, it may alarm you. Its loudness may make you believe the creature is much bigger than it really is. My grandchildren’s eyes have become wide with fear when we’ve camped out and they hear the bullfrog’s croak coming from somewhere outside our tent.
Recently, just as the morning was dawning, I was outside, enjoying the early summer sunrise, when I heard the mighty bullfrog. Since I was quite aware of his size and harmlessness, I wasn’t frightened; but he did make me think of Satan and what the Bible says of him in Isaiah 14.
The thought of Satan wreaking havoc in our world can stir fear in every heart. But what we often fail to realize and meditate on is the power of Almighty God—the Creator and Sustainer of us all! Compared to Him, Satan is nothing. He is a created being with limited power that will be taken from him in God’s own time.
Satan’s power is nothing in comparison to God’s power. Like the bullfrog, Satan’s voice can be heard loud and clear in this sin-stricken, dark world. But we must always remember that God’s Word proclaims in 1 John 4:4: “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
Just as we are much mightier than the bullfrog and have nothing to fear from him, Jesus Christ has already defeated Satan. He will be put in his place at God’s perfectly appointed time. We have nothing to fear if we trust in God, for fear is the opposite of faith. Let’s put things in perspective and remember that God is God. There is none greater.
One day, if the Lord allows, we will look upon Satan, shake our heads and wonder, Why was I so frightened of him?
