Appearance RSV

1 Samuel 16:6-13 When they came, he looked on E-li' ab and thought, "Surely the Lord's anointed is before him.

But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the LORD sees not as man sees; man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart."

Then Jesse called A-bin'-a-dab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, "Neither has the LORD chosen this one."

Then Jesse made Sham'-mah pass by. And he said, "Neither has the LORD chosen this one."

And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, "The LORD has not chosen these."

And Samuel said to Jesse, "Are all your sons here?" And he said, "There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep." And Samuel said to Jesse, "Send and fetch him; for we will not sit down till he comes here."

And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. And the LORD said, "Arise, anoint him; for this is he."

Then  Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came mighty upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up, and went to Ra'mah.

2 Corinthians 10:1-12 I, Paul, myself entreat you, by the meekness and gentleness of Christ--I who am humble when face to face with you!--

I beg of you that when I am present I may not have to show boldness which such confidence as I count on showing against some who suspect us of acting in worldly fashion.

For though we live in the world we are not carrying on a worldly war,

for the weapons of our warfare are not worldly but have divine power to destroy strongholds.

We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete.

Look at what is before your eyes.  If any one is confident that he is Christ's. let him remind himself that as he is Christ's, so are we.

for even if I boast a little too much of our authority, which the LORD gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I shall not be put to shame.

I wold not seem to be frightening you with letters.

For they say, "His letters are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account,

Let such people understand that what we say by letter when absent, we do when present.

Not that we venture to class or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another, and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.

Isaiah 1:10-26 Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sod'om! Give ear to the teaching of our God, you people of Go-mor'-rah!

"What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? I have had enough of burnt offerings or rams and the fat of fed beasts; I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of he-goats.

"When you come to appear before me, who requires of you this trampling of my courts?

Bring no more vain vain offerings; incense is an abomination to me. New moon and sabbath and the calling of assemblies-- I cannot endure iniquity and solemn assembly.

Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates; they have become a burden to me, I am weary of bearing them.

When you spread forth your hands I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood.

Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your doing from before my eyes; cease to do evil,

learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; defend the fatherless, plead for the widow.

"Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD; though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.

If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land;

But if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured by the sword; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

How the faithful city has become a harlot, she that was full of justice! Righteousness lodged her, but now murderers.

Your silver has become dross, your wine mixed with water.

Your princes are rebels and companions of thieves. every one loves a bribe and runs after gifts. They do not defend the fatherless, and the widow's cause does not come to them.

Therefore the LORD says, the Lord of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel; "Ah, I will vent my wrath on my enemies, and avenge myself on my foes.

I will turn my hand against you and will smelt away your dross as with lye and remove all your alloy,

And I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as at the beginning, Afterward you shall be called the city of righteousness, the faithful city."
