Good morning, everyone. Grace and peace be with you.

‘This is my story; this is my song. Praising my Savior all the day long. This is my story; this is my song. Praising my Savior all the day long.

Yesterday, we welcomed friends and family who came to pay their respects to the family in the passing of my father-in-law. A great many people graced us with their respects. Some, I even had lengthy conversations with who knew me, but it took until the end of the conversation for me to realize who they were. There were visitors who shocked me with their mad respect for him and the family. It was a beautiful evening.

This morning I woke up to the lyrics above. What a great song to start my day with. What a great song to say our final goodbyes. What a great song to wake up to.

Some of the thoughts that have run through my mind this morning are quite interesting.

1. Why are we quiet in a funeral home, are we afraid the deceased will wake up? (yes that was my thought yesterday_
2. Why are we always surprised at what we find when the cleaning of the house begins? Why are we shocked that our parents were proud of us and kept memorabilia?
3. Pleasantly surprised at the number of younger generation who appeared to pay respect.

Good evening, everyone. Grace and peace be with you.

This morning, my brain was not braining very well. I think I had a pretty good reason, though.

The service was beautiful. The show of respect to him and to us was over the top. The weather was perfect. The after-event gathering was hilarious. One of the cousins decided to ‘roll’ down the hill like she did when she was a kid…when she got to the bottom, she realized why grown-ups don’t roll down hills.
In the message today, the pastor used ‘persevering persistence’, or something very close to that, to describe my father-in-law. I nearly busted out laughing because that was the best description of him I had ever heard.

As he continued with his message to describe Dad’s journey through life as a provider. That he did not see a lot of his children’s or wife’s home life, because he was working as the provider and ensuring that they had everything that they needed.

With each detail of how he took his role to the core of his heart to provide for his family, my mind wandered a bit, thinking … what if we took that approach to our walk with Jesus?

What if we decided to press on with His message, disregarding the overwhelming urge to do as the world does? What if we gave up worldly luxuries to feed the hungry? What if we did without social media time to read our Bibles? What if we had persevering persistence to live a life for the Kingdom? What if we actually set our phones down and engaged in conversation with strangers … just to inquire about their day? What if …

Can you imagine how much change we could create? How many lives we could save from self-harm, just by engaging in a cordial conversation of interest in someone else’s walk?

Though I did not see my father-in-law in his community as a figurehead of sorts, he was part of the community group to make his town a better place, and he did impact several lives. Not by flashing money or bullying by proxy, but by being a solid member of the community. He touched many lives. If he can do that the way he did, who is to say that we cannot do the same where we are?

Father in heaven above, I thank you for a beautiful day to say goodbye to Dad. I thank you for Pastor Mike and his wonderful tribute to Dad. I thank you for all who turned out to pay respects, not only to the family for our loss, but to him for his contribution to a better place. Simply by being him. As the family prepares for bed, may they remember the life he led and the ethics displayed for a goal to be reached. Flash was not required to live, but living a simple life with simple values left a lifetime legacy to follow. Thank you for Your provision and Your love. Give warm regards to him and Mom. Thank you. In Jesus' name…Amen.

Give thanks, my friends, for the memories, the blessings, and the troubles, for they all build persevering bonds of persistence to overcome the chaos of the world.

Be blessed tonight.

***Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but you also can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer. – Matthew 21:21-22
