“For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up….”
Psalm 91:11–12
It has been said many times that confession is good for the soul, but hard on the reputation. So I confess that, in my youth, I was ignorant and inexperienced when it came to driving safely on a wet road. You see, I grew up in Texas, and because I grew up on a cotton farm, I was able to get my driver’s license at age 13. A year later, though, I was a cocky, know-it-all driver.
My first car was a Plymouth Valiant with a Slant-6 engine, an automatic transmission, and a powerful passing gear. I loved it and even chuckled every time I used it!
Except once.
The road was wet after a rain, and I was coming up fast on the car in front of me. There was no traffic in the other lane, so I could easily put on my blinker, slowly move into the next lane, and pass with ease.
Yet that wasn’t good enough for a cocky, know-it-all 14-year-old boy. I just had to use the passing gear—until I felt the car begin to fishtail. My cockiness vanished immediately, and since I was totally ignorant of how to safely get out of the fishtail, I was in for the ride until it was over.
The fishtailing finally stopped when the rear of the car went off the road into the mud, while the front of the car slid sideways on the pavement for who knows how long.
As I pulled carefully back onto the road, my arms and legs shook so violently that I hardly had the strength to push down on the gas pedal. I was humbled, and I still am, all these years later. Fast driving on wet roads? Nope. Using the passing gear on wet roads? Nope. I still remember the gut-wrenching feeling as the tail end of my car swerved from side to side.
I believe with every fiber of my being that I had two guardian angels watching over me that day. When my car swerved to one side, one of them must have gently pushed it back; then the second angel must have taken a turn to push me back in the other direction. Those angels certainly bore me up in their hands and kept me safe. Someday, I’ll get to thank them both!
