Weeping from Regret
In the nineteenth century, the wealthy Mughals ruled almost the entire country of India. Their grandeur and riches were known worldwide. But all of that changed when the British arrived. After a revolt in 1857, the last Mughal ruler was removed from the throne. Today, the descendants of the Mughal dynasty live in poverty.
Revelation 18 continues describing the fall of Babylon from the perspective of those who aligned themselves with this powerful religious institution, an illicit union of church and state that resulted in temporary wealth and prestige.
Unlike the Mughal dynasty, these impoverished rulers contributed to the fall of the kingdom that once made them powerful. “And the ten horns which you saw on the beast, these will hate the harlot, make her desolate and naked, eat her flesh and burn her with fire” (Revelation 17:16). Their mourning is not caused by repentance—but merely from the lack they feel.
The death of the harlot, the “great city which reigns over the kings of the earth” (v. 18), is reminiscent of an Old Testament law on a priest’s daughter who became a harlot: “The daughter of any priest, if she profanes herself by playing the harlot, she profanes her father. She shall be burned with fire” (Leviticus 21:9). Great also is the punishment for the impure woman, the fallen church, that breaks her vow to God and lives as a prostitute, joining herself with the world.
These political leaders of the world saw the wealth and power of this false religious power and decided to benefit from her by enforcing her corrupt doctrines and laws. In turn, the apostate church worked through these governors to enslave the world’s people. But now these leaders realize that they have been fooled.
Their weeping is filled with rage over being deceived, and so, they turn against the power they once supported. “Hear the word of the LORD, you who tremble at His word: ‘Your brethren who hated you, who cast you out for My name’s sake, said, “Let the LORD be glorified, that we may see your joy.” But they shall be ashamed’” (Isaiah 66:5).
Jesus, save me from the luring temptations of power and wealth and grant that I may have joy rather than weeping at Your glorious appearing.
