THE ADVENT TRUTH
Many Christians quote 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 as the definition of the gospel — and while it’s a powerful passage, it’s not the only place the Bible describes what the gospel truly is. Paul here beautifully lays out that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again. But if we stop there, we miss the full message of salvation and the mission God has given His people.

The word “gospel” simply means good news, and the Bible presents it as far more than just historical facts about Jesus’ death and resurrection. Jesus Himself preached “the gospel of the kingdom” (Matthew 4:23), calling people to repent, believe, and live under His rule as King. That means the gospel is about God’s present reign in our hearts, not just a past event.

Romans 1:16-17 shows us that the gospel is the power of God unto salvation, revealing His righteousness and leading us to faith and obedience. This isn’t just about forgiveness — it’s about transformation. Through the gospel, sinners are changed into saints, and lives are brought into harmony with God’s law by His grace.

Revelation 14:6-7 takes the gospel to a whole new depth by describing the everlasting gospel in the last days: “Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment is come, and worship Him that made heaven and earth.” Here, the gospel includes a worldwide call to worship the Creator, stand apart from false systems of worship, and prepare for the final judgment. It is also a reference back to the Sabbath. This is part of the good news — that God will set everything right and that His faithful people will be vindicated.

When we limit the gospel to only one passage, we risk presenting a half-truth. The full gospel includes Christ’s sacrifice for our sins, His resurrection, His intercession for us now, the power of the Holy Spirit to transform our lives, and the urgent last-day message to worship God alone. The gospel isn’t just what Christ did for us in the past — it’s also what He’s doing in us today and what He will do when He returns.
