Sparky and Buddy

By Deborah Shaffer October 2

“For thus says the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel: ‘In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and confidence shall be your strength.’” Isaiah 30:15

I want to be a Buddy, but unfortunately, at times, I am a Sparky.

Sparky was an obnoxious older Brittany spaniel I brought home as a tiny pup, and for many years, he was a faithful, good dog. But by nature, he was also very jealous. He would want my attention at all times and probably could have been labeled, “Does not play well with others!”

From the second Sparky saw me, he had to be heard. But not only heard—he would frantically search for something to show off with. He was so desperate for attention that if he couldn’t find a suitable treasure, he would present me with a rock or clod of dirt! He wanted attention so badly that he would do anything to get it. When we went on our morning jog, he refused to stay close by me, but would run far ahead. He loved to be loved, but wouldn’t settle down long enough to let me love on him; and he was extremely jealous when I would show affection to another.

Then there was Buddy, my loveable, loyal yellow lab. To Sparky’s displeasure, Buddy joined our family when he was already an older dog; and even though Buddy was not a pup when we got him, he was very obedient right from the start. He would sit quietly, as close to me as he could possibly get, waiting for that anticipated touch. When we ran, he usually stayed by my side, longing to know my direction—going wherever I led, without fail.

Are you a Sparky or a Buddy? In our walk with the Lord, we need to be more like Buddy. He knew what was good and he knew how to get it. His delight was pleasing his master. In the same way, our desire should be to sit at the feet of Jesus, studying His Word and just enjoy being in His presence. He is our Master—and He loves us with a deep, abiding, never-failing love. He wants to fellowship with us and take care of our every need. He wants to lead us in His direction, and He promises never to leave us.

Come, sit at His feet. Get as close as you can. Let God love on you. Be still. Be quiet. Experience Him. He loves you.
