Where’s Your Treasure?

By Lynette Jaque October 4

“Where you deposit your treasure, that is where your thoughts will turn to—and your heart will long to be there also.”

Luke 12:34

Lynette, where is your treasure?

Jolted from my reverie, my scattered thoughts were suddenly brought to bear: Oh no! Where is my treasure? What am I clinging to? Again, I had been caught up in such worldly, frivolous, senseless pursuits, trying to push through my days by what my mother would call “mean force and awkwardness.” Completely under my own steam. No wonder I was miserable! I struggled to marshal my swirling thoughts, to turn myself back around to the path I had wandered from. Help me, Lord, please! I’ve done it to myself again—turned my eyes from the prize and veered from the right path!

“If you do anything, do it all for the glory of God.”

1 Corinthians 10:31 (NCV)

Some of us older kids will remember the acronym pronounced “wizzywig” (WYSIWYG): “What You See Is What You Get.” What we choose to fill our minds with, directly affects our actions, our thought patterns, our very walk with our Savior. When the clutter of daily life becomes so overwhelming, it’s easy to find ourselves tumbling down the rabbit hole of random thoughts and distracting activities. Cell phones, the Internet, and television all seek to grab our attention, retraining our brains to be out of step with reality.

I’m not saying that media in its varied forms is all bad, but the draw is powerful and truly mind-altering. The more we see things outside the realm of reality, the more we get that murky, mental congestion that colors our lives. We slowly stray from our original purpose: to serve and glorify our soon-coming Savior!

Although I struggle daily to keep my equilibrium in this busy world, I know if I keep my eyes on God, He’ll see me through. I long to be with Jesus, my first and best treasure. I long to walk with Him, work in His fields, and visit with His children. I especially long to spend Sabbath with Him! Finally, Sabbath the way it should be! No more guessing, no more failures, finally perfect peace, praising my Lord.

So, where is your treasure?

“As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.” Colossians 2:6–8.
