Seducing the Elect

October 6, 2025

Just as the “kings of the earth” (v. 9) benefited from their unholy connection to Babylon, so also the “merchants of the earth” (v. 11) “stand at a distance for fear” (v. 15). As though she were a giant ship struck by a torpedo, they do not want to be caught in her rigging and pulled down as she sinks.

Babylon deceives the world in multiple ways. Her dazzling attire is one of the ways people are led astray. Rather than being strictly about clothing, the verse illustrates to us that it is with a superficial outward appearance that she deceives. Babylon is a religion of externals: beautiful adornments, imposing displays, meticulous ceremonies, and grand cathedrals.

Babylon similarly attempts to cover herself in “fine linen,” which we are told symbolizes the “righteous acts of the saints” (Revelation 19:8). She performs good deeds that she “may have glory from men” (Matthew 6:2). Sadly, these good deeds are only a disguise to conceal her inward corruption.

And while purple is the color of royalty, together with scarlet and gold, it makes up the colors worn by the high priest in the Old Testament. Instructions for the high priest’s garment state: “They shall take the gold, blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and the fine linen, and they shall make the ephod of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine woven linen, artistically worked” (Exodus 28:5, 6). She has taken it upon herself to erect a counterfeit priesthood.

Yet, Babylon lacks one important color of a priest of God: the color of the law. “You shall have [a tassel of blue], that you may look upon it and remember all the commandments of the LORD and do them, and that you may not follow the harlotry to which your own heart and your own eyes are inclined” (Numbers 15:39). The lack of the righteousness of Christ shows that all her works are for naught, for “He who says, ‘I know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him” (1 John 2:4).

Lord, I stand alone on Your Word. Everything else is sinking sand and leads to confusion.
