A Change of Character

“Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them….” Matthew 7:12
It’s far more expensive to build a house out of stone than out of wood, and in Russia, luxury homes made of stone are called “chambers.” Of course, these are completely out of reach for the average worker, so we have an expression that says, “You cannot build stone chambers through honest labor.” I lived my life by that saying. I used to be a dishonest person, a swindler, and I liked to deceive people in different ways because I considered myself smarter and more successful than them. My occupations were playing cards, shell games using thimbles, selling low-quality alcohol, and many others.
But one day, I joined a Bible course, and for the first time, I heard about God’s plan of salvation. I was so amazed by it because it was so different from anything I’d heard, and it wasn’t long before I began to believe in the Lord. Before, I was always thinking of ways to cheat someone, and now I was thinking of ways to do good. But what could I do for God? Psalm 116:12–14 says, “What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me? I will take up the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows to the Lord now in the presence of all His people.”
Well, I took God’s side, consciously and completely, and for the past 15 years, I’ve been attending church and experiencing God’s goodness. If things don’t go my way, I do not worry or think of how I can get back at others or take revenge. I just ask God to give me peace of mind—and He does.
I work in the automotive business now, and sometimes, I’m aware that others are cheating me. Once, someone cheated me out of 8,000 dollars, but the measures I took were very different from what I would have done earlier in my life. I prayed and turned to God with a request to help me and give me peace. At once, I calmed down, and God gave me the necessities for life and satisfied my needs.
The Lord continues to change my heart, and I’ve abandoned my old principles and am now guided by the Golden Rule, written in Matthew 7:12. I hate the things I did before, and I don’t want to go back to them. I gave my heart to God, and He forgave me for all the dishonesty and injustice that I’d done. I realized then that He loved me despite the way I’d lived my life—and that was amazing for me. Those around me were very surprised by the change in my character and how I lived my life. Now, more than anything in the world, I’m afraid to destroy my friendship with Jesus or betray His trust in me. Living according to God’s principles has made me happier than I’ve ever been before.
