Burning for Wealth
October 7, 2025
During World War II, American merchant seaman suffered a per capita causality rate higher than that of any other branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. A total of 1,554 ships were sunk, and more than 10,000 merchant marine sailors were lost.
Merchandise lost on land or sea has brought grief to business owners and government officials throughout history. In today’s text, merchant transporters express grief over their lost cargo. They also benefited from an unseemly alliance with Babylon, reaping great riches from carrying her goods abroad.
Could these transporters also point to organizations that assist in disseminating the false teachings of Babylon? Are there publishing, broadcasting, and other media businesses that have profited from serving the harlot and who will grieve when they recognize that they have been deceived? Certainly.
On a broader scale, this text describes all who unjustly gathered wealth to the neglect of helping to feed and clothe the hungry. James said of these money-hungry people: “Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire.
You have heaped up treasure in the last days. Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. You have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter. You have condemned, you have murdered the just; he does not resist you” (James 5:1–6).
Someday soon, Babylon will fall and burn, along with her all the great cities of the world that are filled with corruption. Let’s distance ourselves from coveting the temporary pleasures of wealth and live unselfishly for God’s kingdom.
Heavenly Father, You supply all my needs. From the abundance of my blessings, I will be rich toward Your cause.
