THREE ANGELS BROADCASTING NETWORK DEVOTIONAL
Awesome Fear

By Deborah Shaffer October 9

“When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, ‘Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!’” Luke 5:8

As I was growing up, one of my most memorable adventures was a trip to Six Flags, St. Louis, with my family. As a teenager, I couldn’t wait to ride the new Screaming Eagle roller coaster. You see, I love roller coasters, and even though they scare me, I enjoy the thrill and fear they produce in me.

Not everyone experiences this type of fear, though. My mother was coaxed to join me on that ride, and unlike me, she had a different fear. We both screamed. But while I screamed when we were in motion, she lost her voice screaming from the point we were locked in during that first slow ascent to the top! I was in the first car, and she was right behind me. The view was breathtaking—literally—and we both laughed and cried. When the ride finally ended, I’m sure she would have kissed the ground if it wouldn’t have drawn too much attention, while I was eager to jump in line all over again!

The fear of the Lord is like my roller coaster experience. It was awesome and terrifying. It brought me to the brink of death but was exhilarating at the same time. When we experience the magnitude of our holy God, it is breathtaking. It brings us to our knees or even flat on our faces in awe. When the experience is over, our hearts skip a beat, and we hunger to experience more of His presence, again and again!

The Bible says quite a lot about “the fear of the Lord.” Proverbs 9:10 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,” and Proverbs 16:6 says, “In mercy and truth atonement is provided for iniquity; and by the fear of the Lord one departs from evil.” Through Jesus, our sins are completely washed away, and His mercy causes us to stand perfect in our Father’s eyes. Jesus’ death and resurrection take away the penalty for our sins, but they do not keep us from sinning. Only in the presence of our holy God do we realize how sinful we truly are, even as a reverential fear overwhelms us. We repent of our sins and become hungry for righteousness. That’s the glory of God. That’s the fear of the Lord!

A wise person will seek to fear the Lord. “Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.” Psalm 33:8.
