The Sound of Silence

October 10, 2025

Which cities are the quietest on earth? Zurich, Switzerland, tops the list with the least noise pollution. The World Health Organization conducted tests, including hearing assessments of residents, and found Zurich a rare urban place where you can find peace and quiet. Vienna, Oslo, Munich, and Stockholm also fared high on the list.

But the silence of the city of Babylon, after being thrown down, is deafening. Like the lockdowns during a pandemic, music concerts have stopped. The instruments of celebration, revelry, and entertainment are hushed. Craftsmen no longer build up the city. Food workers, who are essential for life to go on, are nowhere to be found. It’s as if an atomic bomb has completely vaporized Babylon and its inhabitants.

The harsh reality is that God will utterly destroy this evil system that has deceived the world and led her captives to death. Not a hair will be left when the smoke clears. While, in one sense, sin will stop at the return of Christ and Babylon will be halted with the seventh plague, its final eradication takes place at the end of the millennium, when the earth will be made new.

This is good news for God’s people. Since the devil deceived Adam and Eve in Eden and sin entered the world, our enemy has been wreaking cruelty and abuse on our planet nonstop. To know that Satan, working through Babylon, will be stopped cold in his tracks is cause for rejoicing. This silence will be heavenly; finally, the Lord’s children will enjoy peace and rest.

All humanity—in fact, all the universe—will know that “God is love” (1 John 4:8). True love is both just and merciful. The Lord intervenes to restore justice and stop sin. The end of Babylon demonstrates the genuine love that God has for all beings. It is an act of mercy to lay Babylon to rest forever.

Heavenly Father, thank you for putting an end to a system of destruction to the inhabitants of the earth, a system that hurts physically, mentally, and spiritually.

For Further Study: Isaiah 13:19; Ezekiel 26:13; Nahum 1:1–9

Key Bible Texts

And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee; (Revelation 18:22 KJV)
